How Much Bitcoin Should a Company Hold?

Direct answer

There is no standard percentage of corporate assets that should be held in Bitcoin. The defensible amount is the exposure that remains compatible with operating liquidity, debt service, committed capital needs, contingency reserves, custody capacity, and board-approved risk limits under severe downside scenarios. The correct denominator also matters: 10% of total assets can mean something very different from 10% of truly strategic, uncommitted capital.

Define the Capital Base Correctly

Before selecting a percentage, separate required liquidity from capital that can absorb long-duration volatility. A practical framework subtracts operating reserves, near-term debt obligations, committed investments, and contingencies from liquid resources before considering what remains available for strategic risk.

Test Several Allocation Levels

Rather than asking for one perfect percentage, compare a range. Model 5%, 10%, 20%, or other relevant exposures and examine what happens to liquidity, runway, and balance-sheet sensitivity after large Bitcoin declines.

Watch the Denominator

A headline allocation can look modest when measured against total assets but aggressive when measured against unrestricted liquid capital. For operating companies, both percentages are useful because they answer different questions.

Reverse Stress the Decision

Instead of only asking what happens if Bitcoin falls 70%, solve for the Bitcoin price that first causes a policy breach, liquidity shortfall, or forced sale. That identifies the binding constraint and shows how much margin the company really has.

Key Takeaway

The right corporate Bitcoin allocation is not the percentage that maximizes upside. It is the largest exposure that still leaves sufficient non-Bitcoin liquidity and policy headroom when the company is stressed at the same time Bitcoin is under pressure.

Frequently asked questions

Should companies use a fixed percentage of cash?

A fixed percentage can be a policy starting point, but it should be tested against actual obligations and stress scenarios.

What is strategic capital?

It is a planning concept for capital that remains after required operating, debt, committed-spending, and contingency needs are covered.

Can a company raise the allocation after Bitcoin appreciates?

It can, but the decision should be treated as a new risk decision rather than justified solely by recent performance.
